The Solution Won’t Come from the Top

Al Gore once said, “Don’t expect the government to change anything.”Perhaps nowhere is that more evident than in how we handle homelessness.
In Ontario, a person on disability receives about $1,400 per month — a figure well below the poverty line. With rents skyrocketing, that’s barely enough to afford a modest room, let alone food, transportation, and basic needs. The math doesn’t work. And when the math doesn’t work, people end up on the streets.

Yes, there are shelters — many run by Christian or charitable groups doing their best. But the reality is, shelters are often overcrowded, stressful, and unsafe for healing. For many, they feel like another form of survival, not a path toward stability.
The truth is this: the solution won’t come from the government or institutions. It will come from the hearts of ordinary citizens.
We don’t need another program. We need more Good Samaritans.
People who see someone struggling and say, “Come in, rest here for a while.”
People who can offer a safe space, a warm meal, a conversation that reminds someone they are still human, still worthy, still loved.
The world doesn’t need more policy — it needs more people who care.
Because real change begins not with laws, but with love in action.
